What’s the difference between Pilates & Yoga?

Pilates concentrates on cultivating core strength in the body and lengthening the spine. Also, Pilates is a valuable tool for increasing strength, definition and proper posture. Yoga aims to work the body equally and unite the body with mind and spirit. Yoga is often considered therapeutic, when compared to Pilates, as it helps people find harmony and release stress. Yoga has many different styles, but all are generally performed in a group setting on a yoga mat with the aid of a yoga teacher.

Combining Pilates and Yoga classes?

Many people feel that they get the best benefit from taking both types of classes, Pilates for control and stability combined with yoga for the physical and mental stress reduction.  At Breeze Pilates and Yoga we offer Pilates and Yoga fusion classes for those who want a mat based workout combining the structure of Pilates with the relaxation of yoga.

Can I do Pilates and Yoga When I’m Pregnant?

Yes, as long as you have no conditions that require you not to do Pilates and Yoga. You must only attend Pilates and Yoga specific classes unless you are experienced in both forms of movement and take full responsibility for you own body and judgement of exercise participation.

Pilates workouts are designed to strengthen your core muscles with an emphasis on abdominal muscles, the lower back and the muscles of the pelvic floor. All of these muscles are important in pregnancy because of the changes to your body as your baby grows, especially as your abs are stretched and your lower back is pulled forwards.

If these core muscles are toned by doing Pilates they will support your baby properly so you can have a more comfortable pregnancy with less back-ache and you will have more control over the muscles during delivery.

When your abdominals and pelvic floor muscles are strong and in good condition they have a better chance of full recovery to normal after birth making your life easier in the few months after childbirth when you will need all the energy you have.

Pregnancy is an ideal time to start yoga. The postures for beginners are simpler than most people imagine, and you’ll also meet other mums-to-be at your classes. You’ll start gently and slowly. Your Teacher will modify the postures so that they suit your stage of pregnancy. Listen to your Teacher, and pay attention to what your body tells you. Yoga postures are generally designed to stretch, not strain. But if you feel any pain and discomfort, please stop what you are doing.

Will Pilates help me lose weight?

Pilates and Yoga is famous for creating a long, lean, fit body. There are many ways that doing Pilates and Yoga supports weight loss, muscle toning and a slimmer appearance. Pilates promotes deep and efficient respiration, which is essential for calorie burning and tissue regeneration. Breeze Pilates and Yoga work with the fusion of other exercise methods including interval training, cross training and strength training further encouraging the weight loss effect. All exercises can be modified to ensure you are getting the most out of your session.

Do I have to be in shape to do Pilates or Yoga?

No! Anyone can start Pilates and Yoga any level providing they have had clearance from their GP or allied health professional if they are in the current stage of living with chronic conditions or injuries. We have a team of allied health professionals we can refer you to if you have any concerns. We encourage all our students to work at their own pace and learn to understand the language of your body. This refers to as Positive and Negative Pain. Positive, meaning your muscles and movements are challenging your strength and Negative, meaning you have a feeling of something doesn’t feel right in the movement you are working in causing a concerning pain for you, at this point you stop immediately and join back in when you feel ready.

What is involved in the Initial Private session with a Teacher or Trainer?

It is a consultation with a Private Pilates or Yoga Teacher or Personal Trainer. During the session your Teacher will assess your specific body needs and personal goals and begin to teach you the fundamentals of Pilates or Yoga and create a personal plan that is in line with your desired outcome.

How often should I do Pilates and Yoga each week?

The ideal practice of Pilates or Yoga or both is 2 to 3 times per week. However, you need to take into consideration – time, finances, stress level, other exercise and burning out. We suggest starting with one session (100% more than you are doing now!) and adding more sessions when you can. You will see results quickly if you do more sessions each week but start with one and work your way up. We offer a variety of styles as all our Teachers and Trainers offer unique techniques in the way the deliver their class.

Can I take a semi private classes instead of an Initial Private if I’ve done Pilates or Yoga before?

We recommend doing the Initial Private even if you have done Pilates and Yoga before or at least attend a couple of our semi private classes so you can brush up on your Pilates and Yoga techniques. Give yourself time.

Why is there a 12 hour cancellation policy? What if I get sick or have an emergency?

We have a 12 hour cancellation policy because we are a professional studio and our teachers and trainers reserve the time and keep it available for each client. They are booked by each class or consultation they take, 12 hours allows the studio and teacher or trainer to book another client and fill class spaces in that void. We know that unforeseen emergencies come up. However, traffic, work and being under the weather are cancellations so please always cancel ahead of time if you foresee that happening. Most small studios require 24 hours, so 12 hours gives you that bit more flexibility.

How long before I see changes in my body?

By attending 2 to 3 times per week you will feel a difference and hopefully even see one within a month pending your dietary habits. Everyone responds differently but wonderful changes will happen if you commit to doing Pilates or Yoga every week! “10 sessions- Feel the difference. 20 sessions- See the difference. 30 sessions- Have a new body!” -Joseph Pilates

Is Pilates only focused on the core?

Everything you do in Pilates is supported from the core (transverse abdominals, pelvic floor, spinal muscles and diaphragm make up the core). Pilates also focuses on breath, balance, flexibility, coordination, control, stamina, toning, posture and overall health. Our teachers offer different styles of Pilates incorporating the whole body movement experience. We recommend you check out all the classes available until you find your desired flavor.

Do you have a lot of male clients?

Yes we have a growing number of male clients whom attend our classes. Once they see and experience the benefits they wonder why they didn’t start earlier.

I recently had surgery. Can I take Pilates or Yoga?

Yes, depending on what type of surgery. We do require a medical release from your doctor and then a Teacher will work with you to begin strengthening and getting you back to your best self.

Is Pilates and Yoga safe for all adults? Who should avoid participating in a Pilates or Yoga program, and who is more likely to benefit from the program?

Pilates and Yoga was designed to progress naturally from one movement to another. Don’t push through pain. Start at the beginning and work your way back to the areas you found most challenging and inform your teacher so they can modify your exercises. If you have any concerns please consult your GP. Everyone benefits from yoga and Pilates, the difference is the level of intensity you work at. Everyday can be different, pending your mood, if you had enough sleep, if you are recovering from anything. Sometimes simple breath work and a couple of light stretches can be the most beneficial thing you do all day for your health.

Pilates/Yoga Private Studios Vs Commercial Gym Classes?

These days many workout methods are incorporating the importance of core strength in all exercise. If you work out on your own at the gym it is useful to have a knowledge of Pilates so that you can make sure your joints, especially your lower back are safe while you are using heavy weights. This can help prevent injuries, including other areas to your body like your rotator cuff (shoulder) as well as your lower back.

The difference between Pilates classes taken in large gyms to classes taken in private Pilates studios is usually the qualification, the experience of the teacher, the duration and the amount of students per class. It’s important that common body aliments’ that inhibit basic comfortable everyday activities and movement are recognised and addressed. Breeze Pilates and Yoga offer 1 to 3 delivery methods of Pilates and Yoga experiences. Level 1 is One on One Sessions, Level 2 is Duo Classes and Level 3, Semi Private Classes of up to 8 students. Most large gyms will have their teachers teaching to 30 plus students per class. If the all the students know what they are doing and have no injuries this will suit many people. However a small semi private group session of Pilates or Yoga with 8 or less students, a longer duration and individual attention allows each students needs to be met without the cost of one on one private sessions, the confusion being in a large commercial class environment or being rushed out the door.
